HALF AND HALF DRILL

Skills and Drills

Half and Half Drill

This drill was created by Kyle Lamb of Viking Tactics, who is known for running a carbine hard. This drill is a test in self control and internal cadence. Scored as heroes or zeros, it’s time to put up or shut up… Here’s what you need to run it…

The Setup:

1 IPSC target. A cone at the 20yd line, 10 yd line and 5 yd line. 1 Rifle mag loaded with 30 rounds or 3 rifle mags loaded with 10 each. This drill is three separate phases of fire. Phase 1, at the 20 yd line, from the low or high ready, the shooter will present and fire 10 rounds on the buzzer to the A-zone in 10 seconds. Phase 2, at the 10 yd line, from the low or high ready, the shooter will present and fire 10 rounds on the buzzer to the A-zone in 5 seconds. Phase 3,  at the 5 yd line, from the low or high ready, the shooter will present and fire 10 rounds on the buzzer to the A-zone in 2.5 seconds.

Scoring:

                        A-zone = 10 pts

                        Outside = 0

The Breakdown:

Gas guns are fast guns!!!! Internal cadence is going to help you along the way in this drill. Those first shot’s should be breaking around .65 to .8 seconds to be able to keep these time standards tight. Dry fire practice will help with that portion. Driving the gun and not letting the recoil drive you will keep you in the scorable area.

Why run this drill:

Anyone that can run a carbine and not have the carbine run them, stands out!!! This drill dumps 30 rounds at near .17 second splits throughout the entire drill… those jailbait splits. I personally like this drill a lot due to the control it requires. I’ve often said, anyone can get a quick single shot and look like a shooter, however, it takes the whole package to be able to drop 30 total rounds in the a-zone in these time standards. Pro-tip: this drill has three phases that take place at different distances. Get yourself set-up for success at each distance before you try to sling it like Wyatt Earp in Tombstone, #Iamyourhuckleberry. This drill will also give you some valuable insight into the balance of your carbine in terms of recoil impulse, muzzle flip, weight and how you have it set-up. This is a lesser known drill but will certainly make you smirk and give you that first mag dump nostalgia.

To be successful here is a tip: when you see the dot appear against your intended target….break the shot. Often people are trying to make that perfect shot each time, which is certainly important, but when we give you a whole A-zone to play with, challenge your own top speed. Let your shot group open up a little bit, if you start seeing misses, back off the throttle and get back in the scorable area.  In this ammo tight world that we are all living in, you could also scale this drill for lower round counts, I will say, don’t scale less than 50%. A 5 round string is a pretty good test for either a pistol or rifle. If you scale, just make sure to adjust your time standards with it. As you start pushing the threshold and finding yourself zapping this whole drill, hold yourself to a tighter target size. This drill is a lot of fun and we don’t often get to push that cadence this quick so get out and rip it.
